As a mental health therapist you will probably at some, point while engaging with me (if you aren't already my client) hear me say, "Maybe you should talk to a therapist about that." I may be biased because I am a therapist, but I am such a big advocate for everyone to attend therapy at least once in their lifetime.
Traditionally, therapy has been thought of as something that only "crazy" or "mentally unstable" people do. Well, I have seen my fair share of clients, and to be honest, I wouldn't really label any of them as "crazy" or "mentally unstable." They were just regular people struggling with every day problems (okay, some did have some more serious mental health issues, but they weren't "crazy"). Life is hard. That's it. It's okay if you feel like you are struggling to get through something that you have never dealt with before. It's okay to experience feelings and thoughts that you just can't combat on your own. It happens to EVERYONE!
You'd be surprised at the topics that are covered in therapy sessions: every day work/life stress, relationships, friendships, boundaries, heck, even bowel movements! (I said you'd be surprised!) Nothing is really off the table when it comes to working with therapists here at Olivo Family Therapy. We want you to feel like you can bring anything and everything and have a safe space to work through it.
But, really, who should attend therapy?
1. People Experiencing Mental Health Challenges
The most common diagnoses that we work with are depression and anxiety. But, there are so many other mental health challenges that exist, OCD, PTSD, attachment issues; the list can go on. If you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, hopeless, or anxious to the point that those feelings are disrupting your every day life, reach out to our office and set up an appointment to begin talking to someone.
2. People Managing Stress or Burnout
We live in a fast-paced, high-pressure society, so stress and burnout have become increasingly more common. Signs of burnout are feeling constantly exhausted, overwhelmed, or disconnected from things you used to enjoy. We can help you work through stress and burnout by working with you to establish work-life balance, helping you set healthier boundaries with your work place and develop coping strategies to deal with the everyday stress that can come with your job.
3. People Going Through Major Life Transitions
Have you or someone you know gone through changes in life that just seem overwhelming and emotionally taxing? A divorce, getting married, having a child, career change, moving...the list can go on forever! Any change, whether it be a positive or negative experience for you can lead to overwhelm and be stressful. Our therapists can help you process the change and feelings that come with life transitions.
4. People Seeking to Improve their Emotional Well-Being
Something doesn't have to be going wrong for you to seek therapeutic services. Therapy will provide you with tools to navigate life's every day challenges by building your emotional resilience. The skills you learn will help you to not only survive, but thrive in difficult circumstances. You will work with our therapists to have a more positive outlook on life if you are looking to improve your emotional well-being.
5. Couples and Families
Whether your family or relationship is in turmoil or you are looking to strengthen your already solid bond therapy can be beneficial for couples and families. Working with the whole family can help to address dynamics within the family that may be causing stress or tension between familiy members. Couples can seek counseling to improve their communication with one another, resolve conflicts or rebuild trust. Our team is ready to help more than just individuals with every day issues that arise.
So, who should attend therapy? Well, really anyone and everyone! We welcome anyone who is seeking to improve their mental health into our practice. Whether it be because you are in crisis or because you are wanting to make small improvements to your every day funcitoning. All are welcome!
